Autumn is my favorite
season. Like many of you, I cherish signs of fall: the spectacle of leaves turning vibrant
shades of red, gold and orange; the glimpse of a harvest moon hanging low in
the sky; the sight and sound of geese migrating south; and, of course, fields
of pumpkin patches and roadside pumpkin stands. In Minnesota, we savor every
last bit of autumn in preparation for the long winter that follows.
Every year as summer
draws to a close, I feel a thrill when I pull out my autumn quilts for display
and snuggling. Today I’m excited to share my newest quilt pattern with you,
Fall Flight. There are so many beautiful autumn fabric collections on the market. Wouldn't you love to have your own Fall Flight quilt ready for use next autumn?
Fall Flight is a 66” x
76” throw quilt featuring my signature pumpkin block, alternating with scrappy flying
geese blocks. Some of you may recognize the
pumpkin block from another pattern of mine, Pumpkin Sky, which is a wall hanging/pillow combination.
Fall Flight has a scrappy
vibe, which may make you worried that fabric selection is tricky, but I assure you
it’s not! I’ve listed the material requirements below, and I’ll share a few
tips with you here.
Begin by selecting your
two orange prints (Orange A and Orange B). These should be fairly similar in
color and tone, with enough difference in print or scale to achieve a little “orange-on-orange”
distinction. I chose two
butterscotch/orange prints from Fig Tree & Company’s Farmhouse II
collection.
Then, select eight fat
quarters. They will be used for the flying geese, star centers, and scrappy binding! You could choose traditional autumn prints or just colors that
give you that fall feeling, which is what I did. I love the prints I selected,
but I really wish I had also added a purple print to the mix. That would have
been smashing!
Once you have the oranges
and fat quarters selected, choosing the remaining fabrics will not be that
difficult. I repeated the star points fabric in the middle border, and I chose a very
similar pumpkin orange for the outer border. The pumpkin stumps could be any brown or
black print in your stash. The neutral background fabric could be a solid or
something with a very faint tonal print.
Here are complete fabric
requirements:
