Bloom-Topia: Release 7

Hello quilting friends! I'm cruising right along with my Bloom-Topia blocks. Today I'm sharing my Release 7 blocks for this fun charity quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop.

Our assignment was to make two long Geese blocks, each measuring 6 1/2" x 18 1/2".  One of the Geese blocks was then used as the middle portion of the larger block, the Geese and Gander block, which finished at 18 1/2" x 30 1/2".

I introduced a bit of Sweet Tea fabric (by Sweetwater) into these blocks.  The navy with white pin dot is from the Sweet Tea collection, and two of the Geese wings are also from Sweet Tea: the navy with white text and the navy with white X's.

The rest of the prints you see are from the Harvest Road collection by Lella Boutique for Moda. I love the warm, earthy feeling of the Harvest Road collection.

The original Bloom-Topia quilt designed by Fat Quarter Shop features the Summer Sweet fabric collection by Sherri & Chelsi for Moda.  If you would like to make one just like the original, there is still time to purchase a Bloom-Topia kit!

Thanks for stopping by!

Bloomington bundle giveaway with LouLou's Fabric Shop

GIVEAWAY CLOSED
Last weekend I had a play date with myself in my sewing room. I pulled out my stash of Lella Boutique fabrics and admired some of my favorite prints. I rifled through my pattern basket for project ideas. I didn’t have a plan, but I felt compelled to create. For me that is the true joy of sewing. Turning myself over to the process, letting the outside world fall away, becoming happily focused on something basic and beautiful.

So today I'm sharing a little peek at what I was up to. Mostly I just cut some fabric and made a few test blocks, but it was a happy time in the sewing room! I settled in on the following fabrics, all from Moda, for my next project:
  • Six prints from Harvest Road (Lella Boutique)
  • Two prints from Farmer’s Daughter (Lella Boutique): the taupe gingham and the cream text print
  • One print from Sweet Tea (Sweetwater): the navy text print
  • Indigo Chambray (Moda 12051 13) which will likely be my background fabric

While making some simple hourglass blocks, I was delighted to see where the “love” showed up ~ all on its own without me forcing it to happen. I guess there are life lessons in sewing!

LouLou’s Fabric Shop and I would like to share the sewing love with you today by hosting a giveaway! Those sweet folks at LouLou’s are offering this gorgeous fat quarter bundle of Lella Boutique’s newest collection, Bloomington, to one of my lucky readers! We hope you’ll feel inspired to create!

To enter, simply leave a comment. Be sure to include your email address. The giveaway is open to US mailing addresses only due to the high rate of international shipping. Comments are open through 5:00 pm (CST) on Wednesday, April 29, 2020. At that time, I will do a random drawing and announce the winners. *Only one comment per person/per email address.

I’ll be back to share more progress on my project.  In the meantime, stay safe and get carried away quilting!

Pillow panel giveaway with Quilt Girls

Hello quilting friends! I know many of you are in stay-at-home mode due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of you are sewing masks, sewing gifts, sewing quilts, sewing anything just to keep your hands busy and your worries at bay. So today I’m running a giveaway with the sweet folks at Quilt Girls. We’re hoping this pillow panel and coordinating fat quarter bundle is exactly what someone needs to brighten their quarantined day!

The pillow panel from Quilt Girls is called Farm Friends, and it is absolutely darling. The animals are as cute as can be, and the colors are so yummy. The instructions for making each little pillow are printed right on the panel, which measures 23" x 44". The panel features the front and back for a cow, a pig, a bunny and a sheep. If you have children at home, maybe this is a project you can sew together. What fun!

Those cute little animals could also be used as fusible applique pieces on a quilt, which got me to thinking the winner might be inspired in that direction. So, I pulled five fat quarters from my treasured stash of Pam Kitty Morning fabrics. These vibrant prints coordinate so nicely with the Farm Friends pillow panel.

To enter our giveaway, simply leave a comment telling me why you'd like to win. Be sure to include your email address. The giveaway is open to US mailing addresses only due to the high rate of international shipping. Comments are open through 5:00 pm (CST) on Tuesday, April 21, 2020. At that time, I will do a random drawing and announce the winners. *Only one comment per person/per email address.  Email me if you are having trouble leaving a comment and I will leave a comment on your behalf. (carriedawayquilting@gmail.com)

The Quilt Girls website offers other pillow panels, as well as book panels, quilt panels and novelty fabrics. I want to thank them for teaming up with me on this giveaway. We wish you all good health and happy sewing!

Bloom-Topia: Release 6

I'm popping in today to share my Release 6 block for the 2020 Bloom-Topia quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop.  This pretty block is called the Lewis & Clark block, and it finishes at 24" square.

The center square of this block is 4" finished (4 1/2" cut), which is a great size for fussy cutting or using a focal fabric.  I selected a lovely navy floral for the center square. I also switched things up a bit on my block, electing to border it with a taupe print rather than a neutral border as called for in the pattern. This taupe border frames the block nicely.

My version of the Bloom-Topia quilt features mostly the Harvest Road collection by Lella Boutique for Moda. I have been using a combination of neutral background prints for my blocks: the neutrals from Harvest Road along with Vanilla Grunge (30150 91)

The original Bloom-Topia quilt designed by Fat Quarter Shop features the Summer Sweet fabric collection by Sherri & Chelsi for Moda.  If you would like to make one just like the original, there is still time to purchase a Bloom-Topia kit!

The Kindness Project: Mystery quilt top is complete

This past weekend, I enjoyed time outdoors in the sunshine with my family. The weather was nice enough to complete some spring yard work and talk to the neighbors . . . from a safe social distance of course. I also found just enough time at the sewing machine to finish my quilt top for The Kindness Project.

If you had time to read my earlier posts, you'll know that The Kindness Project was a mystery quilt sew-along hosted by Sweet Treasures Quilts. The goal was to sew a quilt to gift to someone affected by the COVID-19 outbreak or someone who has served as a hero during this time.

I haven't decided who my recipient will be yet, but I look forward to brightening someone's day with this quilt. Now I just have to decide if I'll quilt it myself or send it off to be quilted.

My progress (and finish) this past weekend followed the Day 4 & 5 instructions from Terri, the shop owner of Sweet Treasures Quilts.  I've included Terri's instructions at the bottom of this post.

If you didn't sew along with us, that is just fine.  All of the instructions are free from Sweet Treasures Quilts, and you could sew on a schedule that works for you! All of the information (fabric selection, fabric requirements, block instructions) for this mystery sew along is available through social media on the Sweet Treasures Facebook page and the Sweet Treasures Instagram feed.
Many thanks to Terri at Sweet Treasures Quilts. Writing a fresh, fun pattern and hosting a sew along is a lot of work, and I appreciate her generous spirit as she led us on this journey. The quilting community is filled with such wonderful people, and Terri is one of the best!

Stay home, stay safe and get carried away quilting!

Bloom-Topia: Release 5

Hello quilting friends. I'm back today sharing three more blocks for the 2020 Bloom-Topia quilt along with Fat Quarter Shop.  These beautiful Release 5 blocks were so much fun to make.

The Martha Washington Star Block features a festive pinwheel nestled in a traditional star. The pattern called for the background fabric behind the pinwheel to be neutral, but I substituted that for a soft green, which I think warms up the overall look of the block.

We also made Magnolia Bud blocks this month. Once again I broke the rules. Instead of using a neutral fabric for the background of my single Magnolia Bud, I chose navy blue. I love how that single bud pops off of the dark background!

My version of the Bloom-Topia quilt features mostly the Harvest Road collection by Lella Boutique for Moda. The navy with the white pin dot and the navy with the text print are both from the Sweet Tea collection by Sweetwater for Moda. I used a combination of neutral background prints for my blocks: a neutral from Harvest Road and also Vanilla Grunge (30150 91)
