Autumn decorating with my Fall Flight quilt

Hello quilting friends! Fall has officially arrived in Minnesota. Not only has the calendar turned over to September, but we are already experiencing much cooler weather. That was my signal to start a bit of autumn decorating, which I wanted to share with you.

Last year when we moved into this home, I hung my Pumpkin Sky wall hanging in our dining room, and I really loved that look.  But this year I wanted to feature my new autumn quilt, Fall Flight. I decided to hang it over the antique door that leads into the room, and then decorate the side table with some fall pretties.

You may have noticed a small fall quilt folded up on the bottom shelf of my side table. I like how it adds another pop of color to the room. That small quilt is an autumn version of the Moda Love quilt I made a few years ago.  It features the Somerset collection by Fig Tree & Company. In our previous home, I had it displayed on a barn wood backdrop.

Fall Flight is a 66” x 76” throw quilt featuring my signature pumpkin block, alternating with scrappy flying geese blocks.  Fabric selection for Fall Flight might look tricky, but I assure you it's not.  Simply begin by selecting your two orange prints (Orange A and Orange B) that are similar in color and tone.  I chose two butterscotch/orange prints from Fig Tree & Company’s Farmhouse II collection.

Then, select eight fat quarters for the flying geese, star centers, and scrappy binding! You could choose traditional autumn prints or just colors that give you that fall feeling, which is what I did. Here are complete fabric requirements:

Materials Needed:
(8) colored fat quarters for flying geese and pumpkin centers
Orange A (lighter).......... 3/4 yard
Orange B (darker).......... 1 1/8 yards
Neutral.......................... 2 2/3 yards
Stump............................ Fat Quarter
Black star points............ 1/3 yard
Middle border (black)....1/2 yard
Outer border (orange)....1 yard
Backing......................... 4 1/4 yards
Binding......................... scrappy from above
*If you don’t want to do the scrappy binding using leftover material from above, you will need to purchase 5/8 yard.

If you are interested in making your own Fall Flight quilt, it is available as a digital PDF on my Etsy Shop

One of my favorite things about autumn is that it unfailingly reminds my heart to be thankful . . . to feel my gratitude . . . to appreciate the simple beauties that are all around us. I am so thankful for all of you who take the time to visit my blog and share your quilting adventures with me through your comments and your emails. Thank you!
