Autumn quilt ideas and a layer cake giveaway!

Just a few months ago, I was whining to you about the spring snowstorms we were experiencing in central Minnesota. Well, I’m back with a new weather complaint today . . . it’s 92 degrees F, with a “feels like” temperature of 100 due to the high humidity. Good grief, that’s hot!

While I don’t want to wish away my summer, my mind can’t help but console itself with the thought that in just a few months, autumn will be here. Right now I’m imagining myself taking a long walk wearing bluejeans and a sweatshirt, tromping on some crunchy fallen leaves and enjoying the crisp fall air.  Doesn’t that sound lovely? In case you are experiencing a similar heat wave in your neck of the woods, I decided to reach out to you with an autumn giveaway, as well as a roundup of my fall quilt patterns!

First up, let’s talk about the patterns.

PUMPKIN SKY

Pumpkin Sky is a fat quarter friendly pattern which includes a material list and instructions for you to make two projects: a wall hanging and coordinating pillow. The wall hanging measures 38 1/2” x 25 1/2”, while the pillow finishes at 18 1/2” square.

One of my Instagram friends, Tricia Rayburn, has made a beautiful version of the Pumpkin Sky wall hanging featuring white pumpkins! When I saw her creation, my jaw dropped. How genius was it of her to use that petite autumn floral as a background fabric? The earth tones in Tricia's wall hanging are sophisticated and timeless. It is such a thrill to see another quilter sew up one of my patterns following her own creative style.

Tricia also made a darling Pumpkin Sky pillow in a salmon and aqua color combination. Once again, she has blown me away with her color choices and background fabric selection. And check out that fussy-cut star center! I love it! If you are on Instagram, be sure to follow her work at @triciarayburn.  Many thanks to Tricia for allowing me to share her work.

FALL FLIGHT

My newly released Fall Flight pattern is also fat quarter friendly and super fun to make. Fall Flight is a 66” x 76” throw quilt featuring my signature pumpkin block alternating with scrappy flying geese blocks. While my sample is colorful, I’ve heard from a few quilters who plan to sew up Fall Flight using Fig Tree’s new All Hallow’s Eve collection, which is comprised of orange, black and gray.  That will be gorgeous!

OTHER PATTERNS

Don’t forget to think outside the box when deciding upon an autumn sewing project.  Two of my favorite fall quilts were created with non-themed patterns:  my autumn versions of Picking Petals and Sweetly Scalloped.  It’s a fun creative exercise!

Finally, even a simple little pattern can shine with the right fabrics.  Here is a Halloween version of my free tutorial titled Coffee Time Quilt.  Just grab a cute mini charm pack and get started!

Let’s do a “beat the heat” giveaway! I have one layer cake of Hallo-Harvest by Basic Grey for Moda that I would just love to send to one of my lucky followers! This collection features a rich range of color with a nod to both the autumn season and Halloween.

  1. Living in the South you expect hot summers, but I believe Minn is hotter than here today!! I don't mean to rush summer, but the colors in the Hallo Harvest giveaway match the beautiful mountains and fall of northeast Georgia. Thanks for sharing the give-away!

  2. 6 months ago we experienced the polar vortex. Somehow we always wish away the extreme weather. As for me, every day is a good day. Although some days are better if the weather cooperates. I love your patterns!

  5. I enjoy all four seasons living in Iowa, but the extreme heat and frigid cold are hard to tolerate sometimes. Those days are best spent in the sewing room with a big window to watch Mother Nature do her thing! Sewing for fall is a great way to cool a summer hot spell! duchick at gmail dot com
