New pattern: Flower Tile, a charm pack quilt

Since ringing in the new year, I've introduced you to four new Carried Away Quilting patterns, and today we have number five: Flower Tile. This one might be my favorite.

Flower Tile is inspired by the delicate symmetry found on beautiful painted floor tiles in historic homes. Thin sashing mimics crisp grout lines, while a repeated pattern of softly colored prints creates a lovely cohesive effect. It’s the perfect pattern to show off your favorite charm pack

This quilt finishes at 44 1/2" square and lends itself to many different fabric styles and colorways. Sew up Flower Tile and you will have a beautiful wall hanging, table topper, or even a child's quilt!

My sample quilt features Strawberry Fields Revisited by Fig Tree & Company for Moda, and the soft and swirly machine quilting was done by my friend Barb at Quilts on Broadway in Foley, MN. Those of you who have followed my blog can probably understand why this new pattern is my favorite. It just feels like home to me!

Here are the material requirements for Flower Tile:

(1) charm pack, or (27) 5” squares
Green................................ 1/3 yard
White................................ 1 1/8 yards
Inner Border...................... 1/4 yard
Outer Border...................... 2/3 yard
Backing............................. 3 yards
Binding............................. 1/2 yard

If you are interested in purchasing Flower Tile, please visit your local quilt shop or one of my blog sponsors who are carrying the patterns. You can also purchase paper or electronic patterns on my Etsy Shop or Craftsy Pattern Shop. Quilt shop owners: wholesale information is available here

Don't forget to tag me on Instagram or Facebook if you make one of my patterns. Some of you have been emailing me photos of your finished projects, and I love that.  It truly makes my day when I see what you've done with a Carried Away Quilting pattern!

Thank you, quilting friends, for your ongoing support and encouragement!

An Easter tote bag

Are you looking for a quick and easy Easter gift for a child in your life?  Then I have just the project for you! The kind folks at Quilt Girls recently sent me one of their newest springtime collections, Garden Gatherings, and I whipped up this sweet little bag in no time.

You may recognize this tote bag; it’s one of my free tutorials called the Easy Fat Quarter Shoulder Bag! Wouldn’t this make a fun gift? You could fill it with a new book, some crayons or markers, a small stuffed animal or even Easter candies!

I used the Garden Gatherings Repeating Stripe for the bag exterior and strap, along with a green polka dot from my stash for the top band. And of course, I had to embellish the bag with some cotton-tail, pom-pom trim!

For the lining of the bag, I used Garden Gathering Bunnies on Green.  The Easy Fat Quarter Shoulder Bag makes a great little book bag for a child, or hip length tote for an older person. In this version, I made the strap half the length of what is indicated in the directions, as I knew the recipient would be a little girl.

In this photo you can see the beautiful Garden Gatherings Bunnies on Blue, which I will save for a future project. This vintage inspired collection feels so sweet and tender to me.

I hope you will hop on over to Quilt Girls and check out all of their beautiful juvenile prints, book panels and quilt panels. I just know you will find the right fabric for your special projects!

Thank you, Quilt Girls, for sending me this fabric.  It was indeed a fun afternoon of sewing!

New pattern: Summer Breeze, a mini charm pack quilt

My third new quilt pattern this year is called Summer Breeze. Colorful pinwheels spin like whirligigs in a warm breeze. Grab your favorite mini charm pack and some coordinating fabrics to create this cheerful scene, all wrapped up by a dancing ribbon.

Summer Breeze finishes at 26 1/2" square, making it the perfect size for a seasonal wall hanging or kitchen table topper. In my sample I used a mini charm pack of "Aria" by Kate Spain for Moda. I love the saturated colors that Kate uses in her collections.

The ribbon effect is achieved by selecting two greens that are the same color tone, with one being a few shades darker or deeper than the other.

I added mismatched buttons to the centers of my pinwheels, giving each one a little spinning anchor! In these closeup photos you can see the beautiful custom quilting by Nancy Jolene Quilting of Danube, Minnesota. It's just perfect!

If you are interested in purchasing Summer Breeze, please visit your local quilt shop or one of my blog sponsors who are carrying the patterns. You can also purchase paper or electronic patterns on my Etsy Shop or Craftsy Pattern Shop. Quilt shop owners: wholesale information is available here

Remember, if you make any of my patterns, please tag me on Instagram or Facebook. I love seeing other quilters' interpretations of my patterns!

Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today! Now go and get carried away quilting!

New pattern: Gumdrops, a layer cake quilt

When I was a child, gumdrops were one of my favorite treats. I loved the shape, the colors and (of course) the taste. A box of Dots still holds a childlike appeal to me, and the red ones are my favorite. So today I am pleased to share another new pattern with you: Gumdrops. Select a layer cake of candy-colored prints and you can make this sweet lap quilt in no time!

Gumdrops is made from one layer cake with coordinating fabric, and the pattern includes an easy-to-construct pieced backing made from 16 of the layer cake squares! Don’t you love it when a quilt back is as pretty as the front?

Gumdrops measures at 64 1/2” square, making it a perfect lap quilt, sofa throw, or picnic quilt. My yard is currently covered with snow, but I would love to see my Gumdrops quilt being used for a picnic gathering on a lush green lawn. Spring will return to Minnesota before I know it, right?

For my sample quilt, I used the Fleurs collection by Brenda Riddle for Moda Fabrics. You could duplicate this look quite easily, as all of Brenda’s fabric collections have a wonderful garden-sunshine feeling.

And yet, I think the pattern is quite versatile and would look great in a variety of fabric styles: thirties, juvenile, or even seasonal prints. Can't you just imagine the center block featuring a beautiful Christmas print?

Here are the complete fabric requirements for Gumdrops:
Materials Needed:
1 layer cake, or (41) 10” squares
Inner Border 1............ 1/3 yard
Inner Border 2............ 1/2 yard
Outer Border............... 1 yard
White......................... 1 1/2 yards
Pieced Backing........... 3 1/4 yard (avoid directional fabric for backing)
Binding...................... 1/2 yard

Thank you to Barb at Quilts on Broadway for the lovely machine quilting. We selected an overall soft and swirly quilting pattern, which complements the piecing so nicely.

If you are interested in purchasing Gumdrops, please visit your local quilt shop or one of my blog sponsors who are carrying the patterns. You can also purchase paper or electronic patterns on my Etsy Shop or Craftsy Pattern Shop. Quilt shop owners: wholesale information is available here

Please be sure to tag me on Instagram or Facebook if you make any of my patterns. The hashtags to use are printed right on the patterns. I’d love to see your finished projects!

I'm thinking we should all grab our favorite sweet treats, and maybe a good cup of coffee, and get carried away quilting. Sound good?

New Pattern: Fat Quarter Flourish

Hello quilting friends! I have four new patterns to share with you this month, and they are all precut friendly. Today's reveal is Fat Quarter Flourish!

Fat Quarter Flourish is a pretty 20 1/2" square table topper or wall hanging made from just five fat quarters!  The possibilities are endless with this pattern. Fat Quarter Flourish would look pretty in soft and subdued colors, bold and striking prints, or in a seasonal selection.

My sample shows a combination of Moda fabrics from Bonnie & Camille, Fig Tree & Company, and Lella Boutique! You could easily create something similar by simply selecting five fat quarters in these colors: blue, red, yellow, green and white!  Here are the complete fabric requirements:

Materials Needed:
5 fat quarters (1 each: blue, red, yellow, green and white)
Backing....................... 3/4 yard
Binding....................... 1/4 yard

Thanks and applause go to Nancy Jolene Quilting of Danube, Minnesota for her beautiful custom quilting on this project.  Nancy has such a talent for enhancing the piecing with scrumptious little details! She always turns my tops into treasures!

If you are interested in purchasing Fat Quarter Flourish, please visit your local quilt shop or one of my blog sponsors who are carrying the patterns.

You can also purchase paper or electronic patterns on my Etsy Shop or Craftsy Pattern Shop, but I encourage you to shop locally or through one of my sponsors when possible! Quilt shop owners: wholesale information is available here

And here's an inside scoop for you . . . the kind folks at LouLou's Fabric shop have created a custom KIT. They've given Fat Quarter Flourish a springtime feeling by creating a bundle from the Flower Mill collection by Corey Yoder for Moda Fabrics, as pictured below! Isn't this a darling bundle? Zip on over to their website for all the details.

Please be sure to tag me on Instagram or Facebook if you make any of my patterns.  The hashtags to use are printed right on the patterns!  I’d love to see your finished projects!

I'll be back soon with another new pattern.  Until then, get carried away quilting!

Spelling Bee Sew Along: Flower block

Hello quilting friends! I'm back with my third block on the Spelling Bee Sew Along with Fat Quarter Shop! This sew along features blocks from the new Spelling Bee book by Lori Holt. I've sewn up Lori's darling flower block using some favorite fabrics by Vanessa Goertzen (Lella Boutique for Moda).

In December I showed you my Capital H and Capital G blocks.  Now my goals is to sew all three blocks together into a sweet throw pillow for my daughter, Haley Grace! I'm looking forward to a Saturday play date with these blocks and my Lella Boutique stash!

The Spelling Bee Sew Along began in October and runs through August, every Saturday morning!  This cute cover shot should give you an idea of the fun you could have with this book! Order a copy today and join the sew along!

There’s a terrific line-up of bloggers sharing their blocks each week. Be sure to visit the links below to be inspired by some super cute Spelling Bee blocks! And check out #SpellingBeeSaturday on Instagram to keep up with the fun!
